An Indian air force spokesman says two air force helicopters have collided and crashed in the country's west, killing all eight airmen aboard.

Captain M.G. Mehta says the two Russian-made Mil MI-17 helicopters were on a routine training sortie when they collided and crashed into fields Thursday near the town of Jamnagar in Gujarat state.

Eyewitnesses said one of the helicopters caught fire in the collision.

Mangled debris from the helicopters was scattered in fields near the air force base in Jamnagar.

The air force has ordered an inquiry.
