Ramanathapuram: A local court has convicted eight police personnel, including a retired DSP and two sub-inspectors, in connection with the death of a woman in their custody at Paramukudi police station in 2002.
District and Session Judge Sathasivam awarded 10 years of rigorous imprisonment to retired DSP Sahul Hameed, who was the then Inspector, and sub-inspectors Kathiresan and Rajaram, then constables yesterday.
Karuppi, who was taken into custody in connection with a theft case, was found hanging from a tower near the police station on December 1, 2002.
After People's Watch, a human rights organisation, took up the matter, the case was handed over to CB-CID on the orders of Madras High Court.
CB-CID registered a case against Sahul Hameed, Kathiresan, constables Rajaram, Subramanian, Karunanidhi, Irudhayaraj, Arjunan and Rangachari.
Deputy Collector Lakshmikanthan, SPs Ashok Kumar Doss, and Manoharan Pradeep Kumar and 31 other witnesses were examined.
Pronouncing the verdict, the court also slapped a fine of of Rs 10,000 each on Sahul Hameed and Kathiresan.
Besides Rajaram, now posted in Madurai as sub-inspector, constables Subramanian and Karunanidhi were also sentenced to 10 years of Rigorous imprisonment.
While Irudhayaraj was sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment, Rangachari to three years RI. Arjunan was sentenced to six months simple imprisonment.
Arjunan and Rangachari were released on bail while the other six were lodged in Madurai Central prison.
