In a statement in the Lok Sabha Tuesday, Minister of State for Home M. Ramachandran said the government had sanctioned fencing in 2,043 km of the border and work had been completed in 1,953 km.

According to the minister, the India-Pakistan frontier was 2,300 km long, of which the Border Security Force manned 2,289 km. The rest was with the Indian Army.

Rajasthan accounted for a maximum of 1,037 km of the border with Pakistan followed by Punjab (533 km), Gujarat (508 km) and Jammu and Kashmir (202 km).

Ramachandran said the fencing was generally done 150 yards from the border.

The minister admitted that compensation for acquiring land for fencing work had not been paid in respect of a 44 feet wide strip in Jammu sector.

"The state government has been requested many times to provide detailed information so that compensation could be paid," he said.

"However, complete information is still not available from the government of Jammu and Kashmir."
