Addicted to love

Remember the first rush of romantic love? It's like you are floating in air! The world seems like a nicer place and you can take anything in your stride---traffic jams, cranky bosses, a bad cold, just about anything. As long as you get to meet that one person who is the centre of your universe. It's like a fix and you need it fast. Much like an addiction!

Actually 'addicted to love' is not just a clever way of putting it. Neuro-scientists have been studying the chemistry of love and the results have been extremely fascinating. Jack Panksapp from the Bowling Green State University claims that lovers are literally in a drugged state. According to him, the neural circuitry that fires in the first flush of love is not very different from the euphoric state that comes from opium or cocaine addiction! That explains the rapid pulse rate, faster heart beats, increased energy and the sense of heightened perception that lovers experience.
