1997 -- Swarna Jayanti Yatra ( May 18 to July 15)
Advani's third political yatra was undertaken in 1997 to mark the golden jubilee of the country's independence and to carry the message that the BJP, if elected, would take the country from swaraj (independence) to suraj (good governance). Starting from August Kranti Maidan of Mumbai on May 18, Advani covered a distance of around 15000 kms through 21 states and union territories, it was touted by BJP as "by far the longest and widest mass contact programme undertaken by any political party since Independence".
However, political observers felt it was designed to project Advani in the cast of Father of the Nation-No.2 in the making. After addressing addressed 750 scheduled public meetings, besides speaking to people at several thousand unscheduled wayside receptions in villages and hamlets, Advani culminated the yatra in the national capital on July 15.
