2004 -- Bharat Uday Yatra (March 20-April 14)
Bharat Uday Yatra was the fourth major yatra nationwide undertaken by Shri L K Advani. This explicitly election-oriented road campaign took place in March-April 2004 in the run-up to the elections to the 14th Lok Sabha. These elections had been advanced by about five months from September-October to April-May 2004.
The Yatra was undertaken in two phases. In the first phase, he started from Kanyakumari on March 20 to reach Amritsar on March 25. The second phase started from Rajkot and culminated at Jagannathpuri on April 14. During the twin yatras, the BJP leader covered over 8,500 kms through 16 states and union territories, covering 121 Lok Sabha constituencies.
The India Shining slogan that Advani carried during this yatra, apparently failed to catch the imagination of the people, resulting in the defeat of the BJP-led NDA and the installation of the UPA government under Dr Manmohan Singh's Prime Ministership.
