Before BJP became BJP, it was called Bharatiya Jana Sangh from 1951 – 1977. During the anti-Congress days it became part of the Janata Party, a motley group of opposition parties. The Janata party rode on a popular wave and dethroned the Indira Gandhi government. The current BJP stalwarts A B Vajpayee and L K Advani were key members of the Morarji Desai government.
