The late Meena Thackeray was Bal Thackeray's wife. She succumbed to a heart attack in September 1995.

Almost a year later, he lost his eldest son Bindumadhav Thackeray in a road accident in April 1996.

Two sons survive - Jaidev Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray (his anointed heir).

Besides his famous nephew Raj, Balasaheb also has many grand-children, the most notable among them being Uddhav's son Aditya Thackeray, a 'poet' and 'lyricist' who seems keen to carry his grandfather's legacy forward.
