Bal Thackeray's son and Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray on Friday immersed the ashes of the late party supremo in the Arabian Sea in Mumbai.

Thackeray´s family had gathered at the Gateway of India here to immerse his ashes.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief and Thackeray´s nephew Raj Thackeray was present while the ritual was being carried out.

The MNS has reportedly objected to Shiv Sena members´ demand that a memorial be built in honour of Thackeray at Shivaji Park here.

Uddhav Thackeray earlier urged people not to create a ´controversy´ on the issue of creating a memorial of Thackeray at Shivaji Park, where the leader was cremated last Sunday.

Uddhav said in a statement, "Our family is grappling with a colossal tragedy. This is not the time to create any controversy on a memorial for the Shiv Sena chief."

"I appeal to you with folded hands - kindly help us to remain calm in this tragic time. Those attempting to rake up any controversy should understand our predicament," Uddhav said.

"I salute their spirit and grit in the tragedy. Even the decision on a memorial will be taken by these Shiv Sainiks. I shall not come in between the Shiv Sena chief and the Shiv Sainiks," he said.

Thackeray died last Saturday after battling ailments for days, ending an era in Maharashtra and national politics in course of which many opposed to his functioning struggling to come to terms with his brand of firebrand nationalism. He was 86.

On Sunday evening, amid chanting of Vedic hymns, shouts of "Amar Rahe", a 21 gun salute and tears of countless followers and political heirs- son Uddhav Thackeray and nephew Raj Thackeray-, Bal Thackeray was cremated at Shivaji Park after a daylong funeral procession that traversed across Mumbai, a city that the late Maratha pride champion almost controlled with iron hand for decades.
