Best of the Week:Andhra faces toughest-ever multiple choice dilemma

Srikrishna Committee report

The Srikrishna Committee report on the Telangana statehood issue was finally made public this week. Rather than give one clear mandate, the panel members have given out six suggestions and put the onus on Andhra Pradesh to choose whatever it felt was right.

If the people of Andhra were so good at resolving their differences, then there would be  no need for this committee.

The committee essentially favours a unified Andhra with special concessions for Telangana but has also provided a few options for the division of the state.

The fate of Hyderabad is the most sensitive issue and most of the solutions revolve around whether the state capital should go to Telangana, be shared by both new states or be converted into a Union Territory.

But no one wants to give up the golden goose or share it. Even fewer people wish the goose to be taken away by the Centre. So the impasse continues.

Far from settling anything, it appears that the report only signals the start of a new round in the fight.
