Binayak Sen's hopeful bail petition denied
Binayak Sen's bail petition was filed with plenty of hope and expectation. All such emotions were dashed by the Chhattisgarh High Court which rejected the petition outright.
The decision was decried by his supporters - fellow activists and his family - who had packed the courtroom. Wife Ilina Sen later said that she felt the decision was from a 'kangaroo court' rather than any real attempt to do justice.
Brother Dinakar Sen was more optimistic however and vowed to take the case up to the Supreme Court. But his mother was overcome with emotion and the 85-year-old broke down on hearing the judgement.
Sen has been convicted for his links with the Maoists. The fact that he probably had some links and sympathies with the terrorists cannot be denied. But what the state government seems to fail to understand is that by being vindictive in a minor case like his, the true friends of these terrorists are being overlooked and going scot-free.
