Once more Mayawati found herself in the news for the devotion by her followers. But this time the object of devotion was no mere statue or even the person of Mayawati herself. Instead it came in the form of grainy images showing her faithful security guard cleaning her dirty shoes.
The issue might not be such a big thing. This is India after all. Paying service to our superior's feet is a tradition in this land. But what really raised hackles was the casual nature of the deed. The security guard, gun slung on one shoulder, bent forward to carefully clean both shoes. Mayawati and every single person surrounding her appeared oblivious to the fact that such an act was even taking place, literally beneath their noses.
No one flinched, no one moved. Indeed for all the reaction Mayawati gave, it appears she was both used to the act and expected it.
Whatever excuses the BSP likes to provide for their Chief Minister, the images are plain for all to see. The only people who are defending the action are the same people who probably also expect their juniors to clean their shoes in public if necessary.
The people elected Mayawati because she promised change. But apparently she felt that any change in the feudal system ingrained in UP was too much to ask for. She seems to have simply gone with the centuries-old flow.
