London, May 11 (IANS) A Briton who blinded his girlfriend by gouging out her eyes was Friday sentenced to life in prison, BBC reported.
Shane Jenkin, 33, of Sea Lane, Hayle, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm on 31-year-old Tina Nash.
Jenkin had watched a video featuring eye gouging the night before the April 20, 2011 attack, the Truro Crown Court in Cornwall heard.
The judge said the attack was one of "extreme violence with catastrophic consequences" and ordered Jenkin to be detained in a secure unit. The minimum term was fixed for six years.
Jenkin imprisoned the mother-of-two at her house in Hayle for 12 hours after the assault, the court heard.
After the attack, attempts were made to save the sight in one of Nash's eyes. But medical experts failed and she was left completely blind.
Nash's jaw was fractured and her nose broken in the assault.
There had been previous incidents of violence in the couple's relationship, Nash told police. She said she had helped him get out of trouble for hurting her on previous occasions.
