Briton shot dead by muggers in Honduras

London, Jan 16 (IANS) A 33-year-old British businessman was shot dead by muggers who stole his camera in central America's Honduras, a media report said.

Omer Kaya from Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, collapsed after being shot in the neck during the violent robbery in San Pedro Sula city, the Daily Mail reported.

Police were hunting for a woman and two men said to have pursued the Briton when he left a taxi, before attacking him while he was taking photographs.

A post-mortem showed he died from a bullet wound to his neck.

Kaya was a director of a property management company in Leigh-on-Sea.

The daily said the man handed over his camera but refused to give the robbers a rucksack containing his valuables.

A bag found nearby contained a mobile phone, two more cameras, cash and credit cards, an iPad and a pair of swimming goggles.

Pictures in newspapers showed him lying barefoot on the ground next to a bloodied blanket, dressed in a pair of white trousers, T-shirt and sunglasses.

Detectives also found an air ticket among his personal belongings, while a pair of flipflops was also found nearby.

Kaya was reportedly travelling through South and Central America for a month.

San Pedro Sula, in the north of the country, is often cited as the country's most dangerous city.

Honduras, with a a murder rate around 20 times that of the US, is among the most dangerous countries on earth.
