Cong leader booked for illegal mining

Panaji: In a late night development, the Goa Police Crime Branch on Friday registered a corruption case against Congress leader Jitendra Deshprabhu and four Mines officials, for extracting 2 lack tonnes of ore illegally from a Pernem property.

An FIR was registered taking cognizance of complaint filed by Director of Mines and Geology Department Prasanna Acharya alleging that the illegally extraction has caused a loss of Rs 50 crores to the state exchequer.

The mines officials are further accused of allowing illegal extraction by issuing permissions to the politician and thereafter misplacing the files from the department.

Deshprabhu, who is currently the spokesperson of the party, was last year arrested for another case of illegal mining.
