Minister of State for Home R.P.N. Singh on Friday defended fellow Congressman Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary, saying the Minister of State for Railways has said that the protests in Murshidabad was peaceful.
"I have not taken the full view of what Mr. Chowdhury has done. I think he has made a statement himself that he was in a peaceful protest. I think we will talk to him and see what the position was," he said.
West Bengal Police has registered an FIR against Chowdhary for allegedly instigating his supporters to attack the house of Murshidabad District Magistrate Rajiv Kumar.
A police case has been registered against the Congress leader, who also represents Murshidabad constituency of Lok Sabha, under Section 156 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
According to reports, the video of the attack showed Chowdhury instigating a mob of Congress workers to ransack Kumar's house.
Chowdhary has, however, claimed that he was only trying to prevent the Congress workers from vandalising the District Magistrate's residence on Thursday.
"We went to meet DM, but he refused to meet. Our workers got angry. It's the DM's employees who turned violent. I was the one who tried to calm things down," he said. (ANI)
