Chandigarh: A high court has restored the pension of former Haryana top cop SPS Rathore, who was convicted earlier for molesting 14-year-old Ruchika Girhotra who had committed suicide in 1993, three years since the incident.

The Punjab and Haryana High court has ordered restoration of pension benefits to Rathore, reports said.

The pension of Rathore was withheld by the central government after a hue and cry over the case years later.

The high court judge, however, said the restoration is provisional and linked to the verdict of the Supreme Court awaited in the case.

A budding tennis player, Ruchika was 14 years old when she was molested by Rathore. Ruchika committed suicide in 1993, allegedly driven to desperation by the former cop who terrorised her family after molesting her.

Rathore had allegedly harassed the family of the teenager and slapped false cases against her brother and got him arrested and tortured. A CBI court had sentenced Rathore to six months of rigorous imprisonment and Rs. 1,000 as fine in December 2009 for molesting young Ruchika in 1990.

However, the former Haryana DGP is out on bail from the Supreme Court.
