Chennai, Feb 8 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu assembly Friday witnessed a scuffle between loyal and rebel legislators of the DMDK party, following which Speaker P. Dhanapal ordered their eviction en masse.

Leader of House and Finance Minister O. Panneerselvam moved a resolution demanding action against the legislators involved in the fight.

The speaker said he would refer the matter to the privileges committee of the house for the necessary action.

Trouble started on the last day of the assembly session with DMDK's rebel legislator K. Tamil Azhagan claiming that he has earned good name in his Tittagudi constituency after he met Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa for carrying out welfare measures.

Four DMDK members - Azhagan, R. Sundarrajan representing Madurai Central, S. Michael Rayappan from Radhapuram and C. Arun Pandian from Peravurani - met Jayalalithaa October last year, and since then they have been functioning as a separate group supporting the ruling AIADMK party.

The members loyal to the main opposition party DMDK started shouting and dashed towards Azhagan after he asked them to follow in his footsteps to earn people's goodwill.

Rebel DMDK legislator Rayappan tried to prevent the loyalists but they began hitting him.

Rayappan was rescued by other members of the house and the speaker ordered eviction of the DMDK members, describing the attack as shameful.

While the AIADMK has a strength of 150 (excluding the speaker) in the 235-member house, the DMDK has 29 legislators and the DMK 23.
