New Delhi: Good news for metro commuters as Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is going to add another 100 trains by year end.

Acute crowding can be a thing of the past on Metro trains, by December, when they start to run every 2.30 to 2.45 minutes.

The gap of less than three minutes between trains is being done by DMRC in keeping with international standards. It will end long waits on crowded platforms.

DMRC officials said that nearly 105 trains will be added and it will take the total fleet to more than 200. The corporation will add six-coach trains.

By the end of Phase II, Delhi Metro will have an operational network of more than 200 km, making it the 13th largest in the world. With operational network extending to more than 200 km, it will join the COMET group for Metros worldwide.

A top official said: “This will give us access to a lot of data sharing and knowledge with other major Metros in the world. Since we are a relatively new Metro, we can learn a lot from others’ experiences and adapt that to make our operations smoother.”

As a new train arrives in the Metro depots every fortnight, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) presently has over 107 trains for Line 1, 2, 3 and 5. Of these, about 100 trains are operational at any given time and are ferrying about 11 lakh commuters daily.

The shortage of trains and high ridership is leading to congestion on the system. But commuters can now expect relief as 131 additional trains ordered for Phase II is now fast being delivered. About 30 new trains have already been delivered. By the end of this year, DMRC is expecting about 100 more trains to be added to the network.

H.S. Anand, Director (rolling stock), DMRC, said: “By December, 83 four cars broad gauge trains and about 40 standard gauge trains will be running on the lines, in addition to 70 trains that were earlier there. We are expecting a ridership of about 20 lakh and these trains will be more than enough to cater to this demand.”
