Delhi gangrape: Trial to continue today

New Delhi: The trial of the five men charged with gang raping and brutalising a 23-year-old medical student on a moving bus in the national capital last December will continue on Monday.

The fast-track court on Monday is likely to decide on a plea by the defence lawyers in the case, that is whether to legally consider an interview given by the victim's male friend to a news channel, said reports.

Last week, the doctors who examined the accused in the Delhi gang rape case testified in court.

Earlier, the prosecution had called the 23-year-old victim's software engineer friend to testify in court. He was accompanying the victim on the night the attack took place.

The friend was also cross-examined by the defence lawyers in court.

The trial is being held in-camera, which refrains the media from reporting the day-to-day proceedings in detail.

The Delhi Police had filed a supplementary chargesheet in the case. It included the victim's autopsy report from the Singapore hospital where she died on December 29.

Before her death, the victim had recorded her statement. That would be crucial evidence in the case.

The Delhi gangrape victim's father had earlier said he wanted death penalty for all the six accused in the case.

"I only want that all six people should be hanged," the victim's father had told media.

The five suspects had pleaded not guilty to the charges read out to them. They could face death penalty, if convicted.

The sixth accused, a juvenile, is being tried by juvenile justice board. He faces a maximum punishment of three years in a reform facility.

The police has said he was the most brutal among the assaulters.

The girl's death sparked national outrage and protests on the lack of security for women in India.
