Idiopathic hirsutism is a condition where the cause of excessive terminal hair growth is not known. It's often found to be hereditary, and results in excessive and increased terminal hair growth in women in a male pattern. This obviously causes cosmetic and psychological concern. It's related to either an increase in androgen levels (male hormones that determine hair growth) or an over sensitivity of hair follicles to androgen. Male hormones, such as testosterone, stimulate hair growth, increase size and intensify the pigmentation of hair.
