New Delhi, Jan 23 (IANS) Wednesday ended on a chilly note with the minimum temperature dipping to three notches below average at 4.4 degrees Celsius. Similar conditions will prevail Thursday.

There was some respite from the cold as the sky cleared later in the day. The maximum temperature was also one notch below average at 20.2 degrees.

Earlier Wednesday, the capital witnessed dense fog due to which several trains were cancelled.

According to a statement from the Indian Railway, 18 trains were running late while 10 were cancelled.

Fog also disrupted operations at Indira Gandhi International airport, delaying some flights.

"Seven international and three domestic flights were delayed. Three domestic flights and an international one were cancelled," said a Delhi International Airport Limited official.

People wrapped themselves in layers of woollens to combat the icy winds. The homeless later basked in the mild sun, bracing for a bone-chilling evening.

"There was dense fog cover in the morning. It was tough driving as nothing was visible," said Vineet Malhotra of Patparganj area in east Delhi.

"There will be fog Thursday morning but the sky will be clear later in the day. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 20 and five degrees Celsius, respectively."

Tuesday's maximum temperature was a notch below average at 20.4 degrees while the minimum was three notches below average at 4.8 degrees.
