Fresh violence in Assam; Govt promises action

New Delhi/Guwahati, Aug 6 (IBNS): Union Home Secretary R K Singh on Monday said the communal violence in Assam would be investigated and the people behind it would be arrested soon.

Singh made the comments amid reports of fresh violence in the state.

"There have been some incidents where some lives have been lost. Both the state government and the central government are determined to get to the bottom of it," Singh told reporters in New Delhi on Monday.

"There are some who incite communal violence. We will investigate and we will get the people behind it," he said.

However, Singh said the situation in the east Indian state is under control.

"The situation is under control as of now," he said.

At least four people were killed in fresh violence in lower Assam´s Kokrajhar region, taking the death toll in ethnic violence since July to 75 so far, police said on Monday.

"We have left behind all the forces," Singh said.



"I want to make it clear to everybody that the people behind this will be caught. We will investigate and catch them," he said.

The police said four bodies were recovered from Kokrajhar and Chirang districts on Sunday after over a week´s peace.

Two people were killed in each district.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on August 1 had said the situation in the violence-hit parts of the state has improved.

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram after visiting the affected areas had also urged people to return to homes from camps and had assured their safety.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had also visited the areas.

Assam witnessed ethnic clashes between the tribal Bodos and the Muslims in recent days.

More than four lakh people were staying in 278 relief camps set up by the government in the state.

The PM had announced relief packages for the victims.
