Aligarh, March 2 (IANS) Steps like launching a special bank for women were symbolic of an approach of "tokenism" in the quest of meeting the goal of gender justice, Justice J.S. Verma, former chief justice of India (CJI), Saturday said.

Delivering the third K.P. Singh Memorial Lecture on "Gender Justice: Significance for Human Development" here, he said tokenism like the announcement of all-women bank would not deliver, if it was not backed by a complete mindset change both in governance and in the civil society.

Proper education to inculcate values was important for securing gender justice and a change in public mindset, the former CJI said.

No amount of alteration in the legal system will deliver unless it was supported by the sanction of society, Verma said, at the Kennedy Auditorium of the Aligrah Muslim University (AMU).

Referring the gang-rape in Delhi, he said that the present movement launched by the young for securing gender justice would ultimately reach its logical conclusion.

In his presidential remarks, AMU Vice Chancellor Lt. General (Retd.) Zameer Uddin Shah said no country and no community will prosper without gender justice.
