A new global survey has ranked India as one of the worst countries to be born in.

India ranks a poor 66 as a place to be born in, according to the survey.

Switzerland and Australia are the first and second best countries to be born in.

Eighty countries were ranked against 11 statistical indicators from national wealth, life expectancy, crime rates, weather, family ties and political freedom to what today's newborns can hope to earn in 2030 to compile a where-to-be-born index, the Herald Sun reports.

The index found babies born in landlocked Switzerland as the "luckiest", narrowly ahead of Australia, Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

New Zealand ranked seventh on the index, well ahead of the Old Dart at 27, while researchers from the Economist Intelligence Unit - a sister research company to The Economist magazine - named Nigeria as the worst place to start life.

Australia jumped 11 places since a similar survey of 50 countries was done in 1988 that ranked the United States No.1 and Britain seventh.

Singapore and Hong Kong were the only two Asian places to make the top 10.

The rankings of best country's to be born in are as follows:

1 Switzerland

2 Australia

3 Norway

4 Sweden

5 Denmark

6 Singapore

7 New Zealand

8 Netherlands

9 Canada

10 Hong Kong

16 United States
