It's a new day and Google is out with a new doodle for us.
They have honoured the 113th birthday of the American artist Alexander Calder with a fascinating replica of one of his famous 'mobile' sculptures.
It is the first Google Doodle created using the HTML5 canvas. The 3D creation (which even casts an impressively realistic shadow below the search box) allows users to interact with the sculpture as though it were hanging before them.
However the technical and aesthetic skill of the creation may have been lost on many users because it is not supported by Firefox 5.0 or Internet Explorer 9.
With a slightly tongue-in-cheek air, Google engineers recommended that users view the Doodle in "a modern browser". This seems to be Google-speak for "use Google's own browser - the Chrome 12". As expected it works well there.
But it is not completely perfect. We found that the description, letting people know what exactly the Doodle commemorates, did not appear for a while on mouse-hover. Also clicking it had no effect - usually it takes us to a Google search results page about the subject honoured by the Doodle.
But such minor things cannot distract from the effort that went into creating this and Google engineers should be thrilled with the end result.
