Scores of Public Health Engineering (PHE) employees under the banner of 'Kashmir PHE Joint Employees Association' staged a protest in Srinagar on Wednesday.

Threatening to intensify the protest, President of Public Health Engineering (PHE) Joint Employees Association, Sajad Ahmad Parray said that if the state government failed to take adequate measures to address their woes, then they would call for a state-wide protest on April 18.

He also said, "This government is dilly-dallying on the issue, as everyday they promise to solve our problems, but the fact is that they are delaying us and are giving false promises. We appeal the government to solve the issues related to PHE employees, landowners and the rest. If they don't solve our issue in one week, there would call for state-wide protests."

In 2010, the state government appointed hundreds of youths on contract basis under a specific scheme and from the date of appointment the youths were drawing salary of 2500 rupees per month, which did not meet their needs.

The media reports claim that nearly 18 government departments in the state had recruited these youths for a period of two years, which got over recently and no decision has been taken regarding the renewal of their contracts.

The irate protesters shouted slogans on the streets demanding the fulfillment of their demands.

Police baton charged the protesters as a result several of them got severe injuries.

In the past also, the protesters had threatened to intensify their agitation against the state government's apathy.

Protests and demonstrations have become the norm of the day as the people in the state vent their anger against the government led by Omar Abdullah, which is marred by corruption and has failed to address their woes. (ANI)
