Gujarat govt's policies anti-people: Sonia

Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi on Monday slammed Gujarat Chief Minister-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government and said its policies were "anti-people" and "anti-farmer".

Modi government´s policies are anti-people. Lakhs are reeling under poverty," Gandhi said while addressing a rally at Siddhpur town of Patan district in the poll-bound Gujarat.

"The UPA government initiated waiver schemes but the Gujarat government did not implement it," she said.

"Thousands of crores of farm loans were waived but the farmers in Gujarat did not benefit," said Sonia Gandhi.

She said unlike the NDA government, the Congress led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government did not discriminate between Congress and non-Congress states and released funds.

Without naming Modi, Gandhi said: "Funds for the state has been spent only in one constituency and we know in which one it has all been spent."

"It is Congress who can think of the development of every people in Gujarat and so please vote for our party," she said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh spoke at a rally in Gujarat on Sunday.

Addressing a rally at Vansada in Navsari district on Sunday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said his party Congress was trying to united the society while the Opposition is out to divide it in the lines of caste and religion for political gains.

"Congress always tried to knit the society and has never indulged in divisive politics," he said.

He said the Opposition was trying to divide the society. He said politics based on caste and religion was bad for the country.

He also took on Modi on the development issue and said development in Gujarat is only for a few privileged people while large sections of people never got to enjoy the fruits of development and remained untouched by it.

He also called the infrastructure of education in Gujarat poor.

Gujarat will vote in two phases on Dec 13 and 17.

The results will be declared on Dec 20.
