Hyderabad: Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) leader and MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi has been sent to a five-day police custody starting Saturday.
On January 8, Owaisi, 42, was arrested on charges of delivering a hate speech in Adilabad last month.
According to reports, the police had sought his custody for seven days to question him. Owaisi is currently in judicial remand and he will be produced before the court on January 17.
He faces a number of charges including sedition, waging or attempting to wage war against the state, promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, and for deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings.
The situation remained tense in Hyderabad on Friday as MIM supporters pelted stones at police, protesting the arrest of Owaisi.
The police fired tear gas shells to disperse the mob.
The protesters started pelting stones at the police after the Friday prayers at Mecca Masjid near Charminar, reports said.
Demanding immediate release of the Owaisi, his supporters were seen raising pro-MIM slogans and even held pictures of the arrested leader.
