Despite the debacle of 2011, the Congress was still sure of winning the 2014 general elections when it entered 2012. It won a measly 28 seats out of the 403 member Assembly. With Andhra Pradesh also slipping out of its hands, 2014 may just be a bridge too far.
Firebrand of the year: Mamata Banerjee
She was a firebrand when she entered politics, a firebrand minister at the Centre, a firebrand Opposition to the Left. As CM she is no different, storming out of a media discussion accusing everyone of being Maoists, crying conspiracies everywhere, throwing a professor in jail, sacking her own minister, snapping ties with the Congress… phew!
Dark Knight of the year: Arvind Kejriwal
He was totally written off when he parted ways with Anna Hazare, but in 2012 he almost matched Anna’s August Kranti media coverage with his own non-stop exposes throughout the year.
