Pranabda was a prime ministerial aspirant, but finally gave up his dream and settled for a nice quiet life at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Congress missed its ole trouble shooter on more than one occasion.
Sporting feat of the year: Viswanathan Anand
Anand had already won four chess world titles in the past, but 2012 was his toughest challenge. Age is catching up on him and he was a newly-crowned father. In the end he beat Boris Gelfand in the rapid tie break in the 2012 World Chess Championship.
Awakening of the year: Rape
India has been battered by rapes and the number has been rising in the past decades. However, this year, the brutal gang-rape of an unknown girl in a moving bus in New Delhi shocked, outraged the nation and moved it to action. Thousands of people protested in great numbers all over India with the epicentre at the capital. While the rape victim tragically died and the government is looking apathetic, the movement continues and there is hope that some change may come about this time around.
