India gets a spy in the sky

Joining the club of few nations, India on Monday received its first Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AWACS) 'Phalcon' which is expected to substantially enhance the country's surveillance capabilities.

The Israeli-made AWACS, also called 'an eye in the sky', will be formally inducted into the Air Force on Thursday by Defence Minister A K Antony here.

The Phalcon, which is mounted on Russian Illyushin-76 heavy life transport aircraft's airframe, reached Jamnagar airbase in Gujarat on Monday morning, 18 months behind schedule.
