Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) Chief Rakesh Maria has termed hanging of Ajmal Kasab as a tribute to victims of militancy.
Maria said the unique trial had met its befitting end and justice had prevailed.
"The death penalty today is hopefully a fitting tribute to the memory of the police and security officers and men who laid down their lives on that fateful night as also the 166 innocent people who lost their lives in this mindless carnage of 26/11,"said Maria.
On Wednesday, Kasab was hanged at Pune's Yerawada Central Jail under a cloak of complete secrecy.
"In Maharashtra, there are two places Pune and Nagpur where execution facilities are available. That is why Pune was chosen.
When asked what was the reason behind the secrecy maintained behind the execution, Maria said: "There are certain things which need to be- there are certain operational details which need to be kept secret that is why it was done so."
