An Indian radiographer has been sacked from his job at a cancer hospital in Manchester after six years following a number of complaints that he could not speak clear English, said reports.

Ramani Ramaswamy had English lessons but bosses said his grasp of the language only got worse and he could not communicate with the patients.

According to reports, he also consistently failed to ask people to empty their bladders before X-ray procedures were carried out and was generally very clumsy at his job.

"His communication skills, even after six years at the trust, were poor and he was recorded as keeping his communication with patients to a minimum and to be difficult to understand," said the report of a disciplinary panel.

Ramaswamy, who began working at The Christie Hospital in Manchester, in August 2005, said the charges were "unfair" and "cooked up".

"The Christie said there were communication problems but I speak good English. I may be a little reserved," reports quoted him as saying.

"But I've never done any harm to the patients," he added.
