Berlin: Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today said that like all other countries which have nuclear power or access to nuclear power, Iran too has the right to use its nuclear potential for peaceful purposes.
Interacting with media along with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Dr. Singh said that international diplomacy must be given greater chance to resolve this 'complicated' matter.
"Noting the recent talks in Almaty between Iran and the E 3 + 3, both sides stress the importance of a diplomatic resolution to the Iranian nuclear issue and urged Iran to fulfill all relevant international obligations and take the necessary steps to restore international confidence in the exclusively peaceful nature of its nuclear programme," said a joint statement on the further development of the strategic and global partnership between Germany and India.
Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai later also spoke on the latest developments in Iran. He said India will continue to buy oil from Iran.
"We will continue to buy oil from Iran. The import decisions were taken by the oil marketing companies on commercial basis and the government has no role in recent decline in the purchases from Iran," said Mathai.
"There are banking problems. There are insurance problem. It is related to logistics and management of oil," he added.
