Jan Satyagraha ends in Agra

The 'Jan Satyagraha' (people's movement) march ended in Agra on Thursday after Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh signed an agreement with the protesters.

More than 30,000 landless people from 26 different states of India, who were demanding a national land reform policy, started the march from Gwalior city in Madhya Pradesh to New Delhi on Oct 2.

The protesters were demonstrating under the banner of Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Ekta Parishad, headed by its chairman PV Rajagopal.

According to reports, the government agreed to ten demands that were made by the Ekta Parishad.

The government has agreed to the demand for a fast track land tribunal and national land reform policy.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Wednesday joined the protesters in Agra.

"I came here to participate in your march and walk for 5 km with you," Chouhan told the protesters.

The protesters had planned to give a memorandum to the Central government highlighting the troubles faced by landless people.

Ramesh on Tuesday said the country would get a ´happy news from the city of Taj Mahal´, that is, Agra.

Ramesh and Minister of State for Industry and Commerce Jyotiraditya Scindia were appointed by the Centre to hold talks with the protesters.

Ramesh earlier this month met the agitators and gave them a written assurance of looking into their demands.
