Chennai: In a bid to take products made by women-self help groups in the state to markets across the country and overseas, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today ordered creation of a State Supply and Marketing Society.
She sanctioned Rs 15 lakh for creation of the society which was aimed at increasing the sale of the products and finding markets at the state, national and international levels, an official release said.
Besides, she alotted Rs 77.50 lakh for improving the functioning of district-level supply and marketing societies, which currently market the products of SHGs.
These 31 district supply and marketing societies would coordinate with the state society, it said.
Noting that the women SHGs movement was initiated by Jayalalithaa during her earlier regime in 1991-92, the release said the state currently had 5.56 lakh groups comprising 85.70 lakh women members.
