I was highly disturbed when I went to Shopian that year. Children were killed in the stone-pelting protests in Kashmir that year. The murders of Neelofar and Aasiya – whose bodies were found in a canal in Shopian – weighed on my mind. And then I spotted this doll that some children had discarded after playing in the first snowfall. To me, the doll was a metaphor for lives cut short, of broken dreams.
