Lahore siege ends; 27 killed

Forces storm police academy

Pakistani security forces on Monday stormed a police training academy on the outskirts of this Pakistani city, ending an eight-hour siege by a group of heavily armed attackers who killed 27 people and took over 800 hostage. Four of the terrorists were killed, while three were captured alive.

At least 27 police trainees were killed but the casualty figure could rise as bodies were still being brought out of the Manawan police academy that is close to the Wagah border.
Eyewitness accounts put the number of attackers at between 10 and 12, some of them in police uniform.

"The operation has been concluded. We worked to a set plan," Interior Minister Rehman Malik told an Indian TV news channel, explaining how the main building of the complex was secured.
