Madhya Pradesh Industry Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, who stirred a controversy by advising women to stay within the 'Lakshman rekha' to avoid unwanted consequences, has withdrawn his remark.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad earlier in the day made it clear that the main opposition party rejects his opinion.

"The party doesn't approve of it and dissociates itself from the same. The party has asked the Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya to kindly withdraw it," he told mediapersons in New Delhi.

Vijayvargiya, a senior Madhya Pradesh BJP leader, today stirred a controversy by advising women to stay within the 'Lakshman rekha' to avoid unwanted consequences.

"Only when Sitaji crossed the Lakshman rekha, she was kidnapped by Ravan. If Sitaji (woman) crosses the Lakshman rekha, then 'Sitaharan' (crime against them) is bound to take place as Ravans are out there," he said invoking an incident from epic Ramayana to explain the reason behind the recent spate of crimes against women," said Vijayvargiya.

"When people cross their limitations, deterioration is bound to happen. It applies to everyone in the society, men or women," he added.

Congress Party dubbed Vijayvargiya's statement to be shameful.

"The state of Madhya Pradesh is suffering due to the amount of rape cases emerging each day. The Bharatiya Janata Party needs to tell the ideological fountainhead of the BJP, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and others to be within limits and not commit such crimes against women rather than suggesting limits for women," Congress leader Manak Aggarwal told the media in Bhopal.
