Maharashtra Govt. suspends police officials involved in Palghar arrest case

The Maharashtra Government has suspended a Superintendent of Police (SP) and an inspector of the Palghar police station, who had arrested two girls over their comments on Facebook over Mumbai shutdown for Bal Thackeray's funeral a week ago.

Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil on Tuesday said that the Konkan range IG Sukhbir Singh and other higher authority have informed the local police that there is no need of arresting any one in the case well in time, but the suspended inspector went on, therefore he has been suspended and administration has ordered an inquiry into the matter.

Talking to reporters Patil said: "According to the report of Konkan range IG, the administration has taken the decision to suspend SP-Thane and the inspector of the Palghar police station. The ASP of the region has been warned to be careful in future and an inquiry has been ordered."

"To avoid such incidents in future, it has been told to conduct an inquiry by higher authority before taking any action in the cases related to IT sections and if necessary the police can seek suggestions from a lawyer," said Patil.

However, Patil said that the incident occurred due to the misunderstanding of the IT act and the state administration will ask the Central government to make it clearer.

The minister the speculations of pressure form the Shiv Sena on police and said that it is only a case of misunderstanding.

The Bombay High Court has already transferred the magistrate who had sent the girls to judicial custody and later granted them bail. (ANI)
