Beijing: A 38−year−old Chinese man was seriously injured after he set himself on fire following the rejection of his marriage proposal by his girlfriend.
The incident took place Saturday in Qingdao in Shandong province, China Daily reported Sunday.
In order to propose to the woman, the man surnamed Wu, a resident of Nanchang in Jiangxi province, drove a BMW car for over 1,100 km to Qingdao, where his girlfriend lived.
The two came close in 2011 but the relationship eventually ran into problems. The girl broke up and returned to her hometown.
Wu filled his car with betrothal gifts worth thousands of yuan, and had even prepared for the worst by bringing a barrel of gasoline in case he was refused.
After arriving at the girl's home, the man proposed but she refused immediately.
Saying he would not live if she did not marry him, the man poured the gasoline and lit the match.
Wu suffered more than 60 percent burns on his body and is in critical condition.
