A development project being undertaken in Chhattisgarh's Kanker District has been stalled after Maoists set fire to two earthmovers at a road construction site.

The incident was reported from the district's Pakhanjur area, known to be a Maoist-affected area.

It took place in broad daylight as construction work was in full swing.

A group of about ten to twelve Maoists struck at the site and ordered the workers to flee.

Local residents are reportedly in a state of panic after the incident.

Maoists have also significantly increased their presence in tribal and rural regions in the states of Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha.

The Maoists say they are fighting for the rights of millions of landless labourers and marginal farmers.

However, the government has termed them to be India's main internal security threat and an obstacle to growth in Asia's third-largest economy. (ANI)
