Ranchi: Maoists cut open the stomach of a dead trooper to plant a bomb inside, which was defused after doctors conducting an autopsy raised an alarm, police said on Thursday.

Eleven Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed on Tuesday in an ambush by Maoists in Latehar district, 110 km from here. The bodies of four men were recovered only on Wednesday.

When the bodies were taken to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Science here for autopsy, "doctors found a cut mark on the stomach of a dead CRPF man," a police official told IANS.

Doctors conducting the autopsy of the CRPF troopers were shocked when they found a 1.5 kg unexploded bomb stitched inside the abdomen of 29-year -old Constable Babulal Patel who was among those killed in the encounter with Naxals.

Jharkhand DGP G S Rath said the body of Patel with the IED implanted in it was recovered by patrol squads on Wednesday evening from near the encounter site and the post-mortem was scheduled for Thursday morning.

"The doctors became suspicious when they saw the body of the CRPF jawan. The bomb disposal squad was then called and the body was placed in an open field," Rath told PTI.

Later, the IED was defused by the bomb squad, a senior CRPF official said.

"The IED was a pressure bomb prototype which explodes on being disturbed," he said.

Additional forces sent later on Tuesday rescued some of the injured CRPF personnel and also recovered some bodies. The Maoists killed two villagers on charges of assisting the CRPF.

Police said the guerrillas lured the security personnel into a trap near Amuatikar village in Latehar by sending them fake messages.

It led to a gun battle between security forces and Maoists Monday afternoon. It continued till Wednesday.

The guerrillas fired at the unsuspecting security forces from a vantage point.

Maoists are active in 18 of Jharkhand's 24 districts.

Patel hailed from Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh.
