India - The Upanishads are written around this time. 563 BC:India - Gautama Siddharta Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, is born somewhere in Nepal. Buddha`s father was Suddhodana, king of the Sakhyas. Buddha`s mother was named Maya. Buddha was born in B.C. 560 and died at the age of eighty in B.C. 480. 540 BC:India - Mahavira, the founder of Jainism, was born. Mahavir was born in 599 B.C. as a prince in Bihar, India. At the age of 30, he left his family and royal household, gave up his worldly possessions, including clothing and become a monk.
