Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Thursday said medical care facilities for the poor and needy segments of the society was the motto of his government.
Addressing a function on the occasion of completion of 5000 cleft-lip and palate surgeries under Operation Smile project here, the chief minister said his government was according top priority to the health sector and has started several schemes.
Admitting that the poor and the downtrodden sections have been deprived from the facilities provided in the health sector, the Gogoi claimed that his government had done a lot in reducing maternal mortality rate and infant mortality rate.
"Much importance should be given to prevention of diseases rather than its curative effect", he said.
Underscoring the need for providing empowerment of women, Gogoi said the "womenfolk need to be empowered so that they can fend for themselves".
