Prez Polls: Mukherjee asks for support

Chennai: Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office (PMO) V. Narayanasamy on Saturday expressed confidence about Finance Minister and UPA nominee Pranab Mukherjee winning the presidential poll with an overwhelming majority.

"As far as Pranab Mukherjee is concerned, it is a foregone conclusion. Apart from the UPA allies, JD-U, Shiv Sena, TRS (Telangana Rashtra Samithi) and other political parties are also supporting Pranab Mukherjee, our UPA candidate, who has been declared by the honourable Congress President as a presidential candidate," said Narayanasamy.

"Sangma is also in the fray. But as far as our alliance is concerned, our candidate Pranab Mukherjee is concerned, he will win with an overwhelming majority," he added.

Former Lok Sabha speaker P.A. Sangma, who is in the fray for the presidential poll, has so far sought the support of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Biju Janata Dal (BJD).

When asked to comment on the allegations made against Pranab Mukherjee by Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal, Narayanasamy said the allegations that they made have been duly replied to them because those allegations are unfounded, unwarranted and baseless.

"As far as this issue is concerned, I would like to say one point because the allegations raised by those people against Pranab Mukherjee, we duly replied to them. From the Prime Minister's Office also, I have replied to them. But they are raising the issue again. Some people have raised the issue and Anna Hazare has already said that Pranab Mukherjee is a good candidate," he said.

Narayanasamy further said Pranab Mukherjee is an apt candidate for the coveted post, as he enjoys the respect of all political parties and the people of this country.

The presidential elections will be held on July 19. The vote count will take place on July 22.

Pratibha Devisingh Patil's term as President ends on July 24.
