Austraila
Indians are spread across the Asia-Pacific region comprising Australia, Fiji, Hong Kong, the Republic of Korea, Japan, New Zealand, and Taiwan. One common feature of this region is that the Indian community has mostly adapted itself well to local conditions and is regarded as a law abiding, educated and responsible community. There are 190,000 NRI and PIOs in Australia and 55,000 in New Zealand. Substantial numbers of Indo-Fijians fled to Australia and New Zealand after the political instability unleashed in Fiji following the coup in 1987. PlOs also migrated from other regions including Africa. The relaxation of the restrictive immigration policy by Australia authorities in 1966 led to a rise in migration to Australia and a change in its nature.
