Former South African president Nelson Mandela was discharged from the hospital, after a nearly three-week stay there, on Wednesday evening.
The 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader will now be cared for at his Houghton home in Johannesburg until he recovers fully, said a statement from the country´s President´s office.
"We request a continuation of the privacy consideration in order to allow for the best possible conditions for full recovery," the statement added without divulging any more details.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner was admitted to a Pretoria hospital on December 8.
President Jacob Zuma spent Christmas morning with Mandela at the hospital and said he was doing well.
"He was happy to have visitors on this special day and is looking much better. The doctors are happy with the progress that he is making," Zuma had said.
