2010 was like a long `coming out` dance for India. The world expected India to set an example or two and perhaps make a stand on a few global issues. And like many first-timers, our first steps into the limelight were shy, ungraceful and filled with wide-stares and gossip.
World Leaders visited us in droves as did mega-scandals. Just as we were beginning to convince the world that Pakistan was the devil we were forced to violently suppress uprisings in Kashmir.
We kept the recession out but inflation was our friend all year long. The Ayodhya verdict came and went, no longer the nation-dividing issue it once was.
Shashi Tharoor was more in the news for his marriage than his stint in the Foreign Ministry or his role in the Kochi IPL team and that perhaps says it all.
We also tried to be good at something other than cricket this year and the Commonwealth and Asian Games athletes proved that we can.
But apparently politics and corruption are unchangeable. Except in Bihar where the old breed was firmly shown the door.
But it was good year of Indian cricket at least. Hopefully we are moving on to a better year.
